STRATOS Our First Direct Air
Capture Facility

Carbon Removal at Scale

Companies need solutions to address their residual emissions. That’s why 1PointFive is building STRATOS: a groundbreaking Direct Air Capture facility designed to capture up to 500,000 tonnes of CO2 per year once fully operational. Using advanced liquid sorbent technology and geological sequestration, STRATOS will take CO2 out of the air and store it underground.

STRATOS is designed to achieve net-zero power emissions* through a combination of on-site power and off-site renewable-specified power from the grid. This power will be sourced from additional capacity for renewable electricity. *On an average over four quarters, the power demanded by the DAC plant and the power supplied by the additional renewable generation on-site and via PPAs balance each other.

STRATOS will use natural gas to achieve the high temperatures needed in the calciner. CO2 emissions from the process will be co-captured with the atmospheric CO2

STRATOS will use brackish, non-potable water from the Capitan Reef aquifer, located 4,000–5,000 feet underground. This water is not used for drinking or agricultural purposes. The water will be treated onsite and used in a closed-loop process to support DAC operations.

Captured CO2 can be stored in deep saline formations via Class VI wells located about four miles from the facility. The wells will inject CO2 over 5,000 feet below the surface into stable geologic formations. All operations will be conducted under an EPA-approved Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) plan to ensure safety and long-term containment. Infrastructure

Workforce Development

Our engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, Worley, has initiated and is managing a workforce development program at STRATOS. Worley’s apprenticeship program takes an “earn while you learn” approach with 12 apprenticeship craft classifications.

The key benefits of the apprenticeship program include:

  • A full-time job from their first day
  • A tuition-free industrial construction education based on National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) curriculum and materials
  • Classroom time included as part of paid workday
  • Eligibility for advancement as key training milestones are met
  • Includes 144 hours of technical instruction and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training per year

Impact and Engagement

1PointFive works closely with local residents and government officials in Ector County, TX to educate them on DAC and sequestration technology, monitoring protocols, update them on the project progression and identify new opportunities to benefit the local community. See how 1PointFive is giving back through local partnerships and community initiatives.
