LFC and 1PointFive launch a world first commemorative jersey to mark 20 years since Istanbul

CDR Sales | 05.06.2025

Liverpool Football Club has created a world first commemorative jersey in collaboration with 1PointFive, a U.S. based carbon capture, utilization and sequestration company, to celebrate 20 years since the Miracle of Istanbul, combining history and innovation.

Crafted to mark the club’s legendary 2005 Champions League victory and support its sustainability ambitions; each LFC X 1PointFive special-edition top will have its carbon footprint addressed by removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere equal to the amount generated during the product’s  creation. The CO2 will be removed through 1PointFive’s Direct Air Capture technology.*

The win against AC Milan in the 2005 UEFA champions league final is widely regarded as one of the greatest comebacks in football history and cemented the club’s celebrated European pedigree.

Working together in a first of its kind collaboration, LFC and 1PointFive have created a unique jersey that is not only a tribute to this unforgettable victory, but  a step toward a sustainable  future. Modelled by Sami Hyypia, a key member of the 2005 Champions League starting lineup, it features ‘European Champions, Istanbul 2005’ embroidered in bright gold stitching with five stars neatly nestled underneath the Liver Bird and is set to become a treasured collectible for fans.

Lee Dwerryhouse, senior vice president of merchandising at Liverpool FC, said: "This shirt marks a world first in football — and there’s no better occasion to do it than the 20th anniversary of that iconic night in Istanbul. Through our pioneering collaboration with 1PointFive, we’ve created a truly special piece for our supporters. Not only does it celebrate the past, but it also looks ahead to the future by supporting our sustainability goals. It’s a collector’s item that connects history with innovation.”

Michael Avery, president and general manager of 1PointFive, added: “We’re excited to collaborate with LFC, a team that continues to show their leadership on and off the field. Our work together is a model for how organizations can use carbon removal technology to develop sustainable merchandise while engaging consumers in a new way.”

In March, Liverpool FC announced its  collaboration with 1PointFive, marking a significant step in LFC’s work to reduce its environmental impact through The Red Way, the club’s award-winning sustainability initiative.

The collaboration also saw Liverpool FC join a list of major global corporations including Microsoft, Amazon and Airbus that have already committed to purchasing carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from 1PointFive.The LFC x 1PointFive 2005 Istanbul Anniversary Jersey is available to purchase now online and in official LFC retail stores. It is also part of the 2005 Istanbul Anniversary collection, which you can view and shop here.

Notes to editors:

*Post-production, LFC will calculate the total emissions from manufacturing, up to the point of distribution to an LFC site (and further transport from the LFC site is excluded.) A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is conducted for the products, in accordance with ISO 14067, to estimate the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of the products. Using this data, LFC will  purchase the relevant quantity of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from 1PointFive representing CO2 removed from the air and stored  deep underground.
