1PointFive Team Visits ANA Headquarters in Tokyo to Celebrate CDR Purchase Agreement

TOKYO (SEPTEMBER 4, 2023) – To celebrate All Nippon Airways (ANA) as the first airline to purchase carbon removal credits, members of the 1PointFive team visited Tokyo last week to participate in a press conference marking the recent carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credit purchase agreement signed with ANA. Michael Avery, President; Anthony Cottone, Vice President of Finance; Austin Danford, Director of Business Development; and Eugene Zamastsyanin, Director of Commercial, made the journey, as did Anna Stukas, Vice President, Strategic Partnerships.

ANA Group aims to achieve net zero in fiscal 2050 and is focused on four approaches, including the utilization of negative emissions technologies (NETs). The agreement, beginning in 2025, calls for 10,000 tonnes of CDR credits to be delivered per year enabled by STRATOS, which is expected to be commercially operational in 2025.

“Reaching our goal of net zero is one of the key priorities for ANA, and we are actively diversifying our methods to pursue sustainability,” said Shinichi Inoue, President and CEO of ANA, upon announcement of the agreement. “As we continue to review and invest in sustainable and innovative technologies and processes that help further our mission, we look forward to seeing the positive impact that partnering with 1PointFive brings to our airline."

Press conference with 1PointFive and ANA

Members of the 1PointFive team spent the week in Tokyo having productive conversations about how Direct Air Capture can help companies in Japan and beyond advance their progress toward their net-zero targets.

The 1PointFive team visited ANA’s headquarters on its final day in Tokyo to participate in a press conference. In keeping with Japanese business custom, the ANA and 1PointFive leadership teams exchanged gifts as a sign of respect and to signify the completion of the deal. Michael Avery presented Hidekazu Yoshida, EVP (i/o Director), with a crystal airplane, emblazoned with both of our organizations’ logos, symbolizing our relationship taking flight in 2023.

Avery and Yoshida then engaged in a formal press conference with local Japanese media. Journalist Junko Kajiwara of The Nikkei, one of Japan’s leading business and financial publications, provided the following takeaway from the joint press conference: “While decarbonization efforts are progressing in a variety of industries, some industries are having difficulty decarbonizing due to difficulties in procuring alternative fuels that emit less CO2. For this reason, the market for CO2 capture technologies and services such as DAC is expected to continue to grow. More efficient CO2 capture technologies need to be put to practical use as soon as possible.”

Before departing, the 1PointFive team hosted a carbon removal dinner with ANA and local leaders in carbon removal that produced stronger bonds and lofty aspirations on the future of the industry. As a sign of gratitude for ANA’s hospitality, the 1PointFive team presented hand-crafted wooden goblets featuring both companies’ logos.

The entire 1PointFive organization is grateful to ANA for their hospitality and support. The team is looking forward to continuing our relationship through the delivery of ANA’s CDR credits.
